The Raccoon That Broke the Internet

A raccoon stands alone on a wooden deck at dusk, bathed in amber light, gazing directly at the camera with an expression of bewildered innocence while blurred social media text floats in the background like digital moths.

Bluesky was having a normal Tuesday when someone posted a photo of a raccoon.

Not just any raccoon.

This one had a name: Jimothy.

Within hours, Jimothy was everywhere.

The posts multiplied.

The jokes spiraled.

People who had never met each other began speaking the same language—a language that somehow centered entirely around one trash-eating animal with a stupid expression and apparently perfect comedic timing.

On Wikipedia, Jimothy climbed the rankings. #51 on English Wikipedia.

Above articles about countries.

Above explanations of physics.

A raccoon.

The question nobody asked out loud but everyone felt: What the hell is happening?

The internet has fractured.

We all know this.

Twitter became X.

Reddit's appeal system broke.

TikTok faces an existential crisis.

Discord servers splinter into micro-communities.

We're scattered across platforms that don't talk to each other, consuming entirely different information, angry at different things.

And then Jimothy appeared.

For a moment, the internet aligned around something.

Not a tragedy.

Not a disaster.

Not a celebrity meltdown or a political scandal.

A raccoon.

A stupid, beautiful, completely inexplicable raccoon.

The raccoon had a name that sounded absurd.

Jimothy.

Not Jim.

Not Timothy.

Jimothy—a construction so obviously fake, so deliberately wrong, that it landed somewhere between a sneeze and a cry for help.

Why Jimothy?

Where did Jimothy come from?

Who named Jimothy, and more importantly, why did everyone else immediately understand that the name was perfect?

Those questions mattered.

They still matter.

But first, you need to understand what Bluesky actually is.

Most people don't.

They think it's just "Twitter but decentralized" or "what Twitter should have been all along."

Both things are technically true.

Both things miss the point entirely.

Bluesky is what happens when you give people a blank space and say: build something.

No algorithm forcing you to see rage.

No ads deciding your feed.

No Elon Musk.

Just protocol and possibility.

It's small enough that you can still see everything.

It's big enough that things actually happen.

It's the size of the internet in 1997—that weird window when anything felt possible but nobody had figured out how to monetize hope yet.

And in that space, Jimothy was born.

But who actually saw Jimothy first?

Where did the photo come from?

Was Jimothy real, or was Jimothy a concept that someone had dreamed into being?
