When Best Friends Must Fight to Remember Each Other
The Island Appears: When the Portal Opens, Everything Changes

Jo and Raissa stood at the cliff's edge, watching the island materialize like a photograph developing in water. One moment: ordinary afternoon. Next moment: impossible architecture rising from fog, spires that twisted into colors without names.
Raissa grabbed Jo's hand. "Did you see that?"
They didn't choose to jump. The ground simply tilted. The world inverted. When they landed on the island's shore, sand beneath their feet felt real—too real—in a way that made everything before it seem like a dream they'd both half-remembered.
A figure waited for them at the waterline. Tall. Robed in something that wasn't quite fabric. The figure's face kept shifting, never settling into one shape long enough to describe.
"Welcome," it said. Its voice sounded like wind through ruins. "You've been brought here because something in this world requires your particular bond. The friendship between you." The figure paused. "We will need to borrow it."
Jo felt the words land wrong. "Borrow it?"
"When you leave, you won't remember each other." The figure tilted its head. "That is the price of return."
Neither girl understood yet what that meant.
